The Val di Sieve, corresponding to the lower valley of the river of the same name before it joins the Arno, has always been an important link between northern and central Italy. The relatively low altitude of the Apennine ridge and its strategic geographical position as a crossroads between Bologna, Romagna, Florence, Arezzo and Casentino have historically made it a major transit point for people and goods.

At the same time, historical events have reinforced its identity as a border area and a hinge between the city and the mountains, the north and the south, the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea, making it a land of welcome and refuge for partisans, rebels and other more marginalised or minority groups. The musical and dance traditions passed down by the farmers and mountain dwellers of this valley bear witness to all these passages.
