FLAVORS OF UKRAINE
Gastronomic and Community Gathering
Saturday, June 27
Casa da Ribeira (Viseu, Portugal)
As part of the project “Landscapes, Voices, and Flavors of the Ukrainian Community in Viseu,” the gastronomic gathering “Flavors of Ukraine” took place on June 27 at Casa da Ribeira, attended by the Honorable Councillor of the Municipality of Viseu, Dr. Pedro Ribeiro; the Honorable President of the Calde Parish Council, Mr. Hermenegildo Ribeiro; the Honorable Members of the Viseu Parish Council, Fernanda Almeida and Alberto Costa, representatives from House of Brazil in Viseu, as well as members of the Várzea de Calde Linen Ethnographic Group, in addition to the Ukrainian community, the Casa da Ribeira team, and the co-organizing associations, the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu and Binaural Nodar.
During the event, Ukrainian identity was explored through another fundamental aspect of the country’s culture: gastronomy, both in its regional variations and in those tied to the cycle of the year. Through the flavors of Ukraine, the project’s partners and friends were introduced to a little more of the traditions, diversity, and richness of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the sharing of traditional songs from Ukraine and Várzea de Calde, as well as a demonstration of the artisanal process of processing linen, a fabric that symbolizes both Várzea de Calde and the Ukrainian nation.
This event marked the start of the project’s second phase, developed in partnership with the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu, with support from the Municipality of Viseu through Casa da Ribeira and the Várzea de Calde Linen Museum, with support from the Calde Parish Council, and co-financed by the Creative Europe program as part of the Rede Tramontana project and by the Directorate-General for the Arts.
