FIELD RESEARCH & SOUND EDITING
Summer School
28th and 29th July 2026
Presentation: 1st August 2026
Granja Ativa 2026 — International Work Camp
Granja (Mões, Castro Daire).
Binaural Nodar is organising the summer school Field Research & Sound Editing on 28 and 29 July in the village of Granja (civil parish of Mões, municipality of Castro Daire). The initiative is part of Granja Ativa 2026 — International Work Camp, and offers participants a practical immersion in field recording techniques, exploring the unique landscape and ethnographic contexts of this mountain village in the municipality of Castro Daire.
Over the two days of work, participants will be invited to capture the sounds of the local soundscape — from the natural textures of the rural surroundings to the voices, crafts and memories of its people — and to transform these recordings into sound narratives through editing and assemblage. It is an exercise that is both technical and sensitive, one that combines listening, recording and creation, and invites participants to hear the territory as a raw material for artistic composition.
This initiative is co-financed by the Portuguese Republic — Directorate-General for the Arts — and the European Union, through the Tramontana Network project, which is part of the Creative Europe programme. Its realisation also marks a symbolic date: 20 years of sound-based educational work that Binaural Nodar has been developing in rural contexts in the Viseu Dão Lafões region, through a sustained practice of listening and sound creation shared with local communities.
The ‘Field Research & Sound Edition’ initiative continues a trajectory of educational projects that, over two decades, have combined field research and sound composition with young people and adults: from ‘Sound Villages’ (2007-2011) to Silence, as we are about to listen to Carvalhais (2009), through the Nodar Summer School (2012-2013), I Hear, I Remember and I feel (2015-2026) and Sketch & Sound (2018-2026). The result of this work will be presented to the public on 1 August, as part of the closing event for Granja Ativa 2026.
