Description:

“Tessitura” is an audiovisual essay by Luís Gomes da Costa that interweaves the art of the loom and the handmade textile production of two rural communities: Campotosto, in Abruzzo, Italy, and Várzea de Calde, in Viseu, Portugal. This artistic journey draws on ancient symbolisms of spinning and weaving, tracing an invisible thread that joins different cultures and eras.

The audiovisual essay sets out to go beyond the documentary record and become a conceptual loom where the realities of Campotosto and Várzea de Calde cross. On the artistic plane, the work inhabits a “third place”, a threshold where memory, perception and desire converge to create a “third weave” — an evocative space that brings disparate geographical elements together in a common, transitory fabric.

Work produced by Binaural Nodar (Viseu Dão Lafões, Portugal) in partnership with Bambun APS, Centro Studi Don Nicola Jobbi and the University of Teramo (Abruzzo, Italy), as part of the author’s doctoral research in the Doctoral Programme in Artistic Creation of the University of Aveiro.

Academic support from the University of Aveiro (ID+ Research Center) and the School of Arts and Design, Caldas da Rainha (LiDA Research Center), and co-funding by the Directorate-General for the Arts (Portugal) and the Creative Europe programme, in the context of the Tramontana Network project.
