This is an initiative of Eth Ostau Comengés as part of the “Creative Europe Tramontana IV” project.
At a time when roads were impassable, the Garonne was a vital artery, an essential transport route linking the Pyrenees to Toulouse. On its upper stretch only rafts could navigate: built at their place of departure, they were loaded with goods and then sold in their entirety on arrival, the cargo and the timber of the raft itself. Who were the men who went down the river, how did they work, what did they carry and for whom? Marc Galy and Matiu Fauré took the 20 people gathered at La Cafetière in search of the raftsmen whose lives and journeys were shaped by the Garonne.
