Description :
This programme from Radio Pays is part of the European project Tramontana Network (Réseau Tramontana / Tramontana Network), co-funded by the European Union, which highlights rural voices, local cultures, languages and community experiences across European territories. In this episode of Urality and Humanity, the programme returns to Aveyron to meet Pierre and Jacques, two committed actors of the territory who reflect on the relationship between language, agriculture, identity and the survival of rural communities. The discussion focuses particularly on Occitan, a language deeply connected to the land, its people and their collective memory.
Pierre explains his personal journey with Occitan, a language he learned naturally in childhood and later rediscovered through reading, writing and cultural engagement. He describes Occitan not only as a means of communication but as a form of music, a way of expressing a particular relationship with places, traditions and everyday life. The speakers underline that the decline of rural services, agriculture and local activities threatens the transmission of language and culture, while the arrival of new inhabitants in rural areas can also create opportunities for renewal, provided they engage with local history and traditions.
The programme also explores the links between language and territorial action, using examples such as the defence of Roquefort cheese and farmers’ struggles as expressions of cultural identity. Pierre and Jacques discuss how language, farming practices and landscapes are interconnected, and they recall traditions such as transhumance and local stories that preserve collective imagination. Through their reflections, the episode presents rural culture as something alive and constantly evolving, where protecting language means protecting a way of inhabiting and understanding the world.
