Description :

This episode of Orality and Humanity, broadcast by Radio Pais, is part of the European Tramontana Network (Réseau Tramontana) project, co-funded by the European Union. Continuing the conversation with Jean-Paul Ferré, the programme focuses on the long-term work of the association Eth Ostau Comengés, dedicated to field research, documentation, and the dissemination of the linguistic and cultural heritage of Comminges and Couserans. The interview explores how this initiative has developed the technical, financial, and human resources needed to preserve and share local memories.

Jean-Paul Ferré explains that the growth of the association’s audiovisual work required a gradual process of organisation, investment, and collaboration. A major step was taken in 2012 with the recruitment of a person dedicated to filming, editing, and managing the entire production process. This allowed the association to significantly increase the number of recordings and documentaries produced. Ferré also highlights the importance of partnerships, cultural venues, and local networks in ensuring that these films reach audiences through cinemas, community events, educational settings, DVDs, and online distribution.

The interview also explores the human dimension behind this documentary work. Ferré emphasises that the success of his films depends on building trust and genuine relationships with the people being filmed. His approach is based on simplicity, allowing people to speak naturally and present their own experiences without artificial staging. Through these encounters, he discovers a form of humanity characterised by generosity, humility, and authenticity. For him, documenting local culture is not only about preserving the past, but also about recognising the knowledge and dignity of the people who continue to shape these territories.
