In this programme, historian Ariane Bruneton continues her exploration of Pyrenean migration to the Americas by focusing on the remarkable achievements of Béarnais emigrants and the lasting impact they had both overseas and in their homeland.
The discussion highlights several outstanding figures whose careers illustrate the opportunities created by emigration. Among them is Jean de Laborde, who amassed a vast fortune through mining in Mexico, as well as Béarnais entrepreneurs who helped build San Francisco’s famous cable tram system, contributed to the drafting of California’s constitution, and became influential business leaders, politicians and professionals across the Americas. Bruneton argues that these emigrants succeeded thanks to their adaptability, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, while also suggesting that Béarn itself may have lost many of its most dynamic individuals through emigration.
The programme also examines the return of some emigrants, whose wealth transformed villages through the construction of elegant houses known as “American” homes. It explores the development of Béarnais professional networks abroad, particularly in California, where many specialised in laundries, hospitality, restaurants, bakeries and other trades, creating thriving communities that recruited relatives and neighbours from the Pyrenees. The episode concludes by introducing the rich collection of emigrants’ letters, which will be explored in a subsequent programme as a unique source for understanding their experiences and maintaining ties between Europe and the Americas.
